LightZone is a professional photo browser and editor, like Aperture or Lightroom. It's also useful for amateurs, like iPhoto or Picasa. It runs on Linux, Windows, and Mac. The Linux version is free, as in beer.

It features RAW file support, high-fidelity color space management, non-destructive editing, and color-managed display, printing and export. It's got layers and masks, and they're easy to use. It's mostly written in Java, and it includes a Java runtime environment.
